ARE YOU COOKING WITH TOXIC OILS?

Vegetable oils are made through the extraction process from seeds and sadly in the most unnatural way.

The process involves shredding the seeds, washing them with sodium hydroxide, bleaching the oil extracted from them and finally going through a steaming process at a high industrial heat to remove smell. What once was a humble seed, I’m sure filled with some kind of beneficial nutrient, is now chemically soaked, bleached and heated to a level that not one nutrient would survive.  It also holds a HUGE amount of toxic chemicals as residue from the process.

When you’re in the supermarket, looking through the oils to purchase, most people are drawn to the vegetable and flower oils. They must be healthy for you; they are made from vegetables? Plus, they appear to be the most cost effective oil on the shelf. Feels like a win.

Sadly, most people wouldn’t understand how much of a loss it is to put these oils in a human body.

Vegetable oils are

  • Safflower
  • Sunflower
  • Corn
  • Cottonseed
  • Soybean
  • Corn
  • Canola

Even organic or cold pressed versions, that didn’t go through the same harsh process, there are consequences to consumption that can be devastating on the body, if not balanced out correctly.

Vegetable oils are high in omega 6’s and fall into the polyunsaturated oil group, meaning they have double bonds.  Oils of this kind are detrimental to us and increase harmful reactions within our bodies.

You may have heard that omega 6’s are good for you. Yes they are, but not in an overdose. Omega 6’s need Omega 3’s to balance out and vice versa. Our bodies don’t produce the omega fatty acid so we need to get them from our food.

We need Omega 6’s for pro-inflammation and Omega 3’s for an anti-inflammation.  Inflammation is important for our bodies to fight off infections and injuries so we need some levels of it, but it can also contribute to disease due to the imbalance of the omegas within our bodies.  There are good & not so good sources of Omega 6.  The bad include vegetable oils, margarines, refined grains & cereals.  Better options include poultry, eggs, nuts & unrefined grains.

Omega 3 foods include:

  • Flaxseeds
  • Chia seeds
  • Walnuts
  • Oily fish and seafood
  • Soybeans
  • Spinach
  • Egg yokes
  • Grass fed meat

The ratio of omega fatty acids should be 4:1, omega 6’s to omega 3’s. Todays mainstream recommended diet by so called health professionals is anywhere between 10:1 to 20:1, tipping the omega 6 pro inflammation quality off the chart. Sadly, having a constant overdoes of inflammation throughout your body can lead to many health problems, allergies and diseases.

You may think you are avoiding these oils already, as you use coconut oil and olive oil. By simply doing that, you are a step ahead of the rest. Vegetable oils are used in just about all pre-packed items within the grocery store, as it is also a fantastic preservative and cheap to cook with. Many bakeries and cafes cook with these oils, and use them in all their breads, pastries, slices and gluten free muffins.

Some common foods these oils are in:

– Crackers / Chips / Pop corn

– Kids health food snacks (yes from the health food isle)

– Baked goods from all bakeries, i.e. bread

– Café items, even from your favourite gluten free shop

– Deep fried foods are cooked in them

Our advice would be if you haven’t already made the switch from vegetable oils, please do! Coconut oils and Olive oils are a fantastic alternative; they also are filled with amazing health benefits. Limiting your consumption of all the packaged items within the supermarkets, bakeries and cafes will also reduce your exposure.  Alternatively, if you do head out, choose raw options for treats and check they have used coconut oil to make them and steer clear from deep fried or baked goods. Those types of foods are nutrient deficient, high in calories and quite simply aren’t good for you. Lastly make your baked items from home using coconut oils, organic butter and olive oils, that way you also know what’s in them.

Knowledge is power. If you or any of your family members suffer from constant sickness, allergies, anxiety/depression, disease and inflammation within your body through headaches, muscle aches and gut issues try making the change today. The damage done, will need to be healed through gut healing methods but you will be far healthier without the oils and all the inflammation it causes to the human body.
