Kombucha is one of the hottest trends going around. It’s popularity has exploded as more people have gained more of an understanding of the importance of gut health. Essentially it is tea.

How it is made?
Sugar is added to the tea and then a microbial community called the ‘Scoby” is added. The yeasts use the sugars in the tea to produce alcohol. The alcohol is then consumed by the bacteria to produce vinegar, and when bottled the carbon dioxide is trapped making it bubbly. 

There are 4 beneficial probiotics in Kombucha. 

  1. Gluconacetobacter 
  2. Acetobacter 
  3. Lactobacillus 
  4. Zygosaccharomyces 

Drinking the probiotic and gut healing drink is a fantastic way to help and restore a persons gut flora. Research indicates that all disease and sickness, whether physical, emotional or mental begins in the gut. Drinking Kombucha is the perfect way to protect yourself.  Think of it as ‘insurance for your good health.’

Some of the health benefits include:
1. Promotes detoxification 
The enzymes and bacterial acids ease the load on the liver by binding the toxins and releasing them through the kidneys or intestines.

After the fermentation process Kombucha comes alive with beneficial acids; acetic, gluconic and lactic, that will improve digestion.

Due to the gluconic acid, known as glucosamine, Kombucha can repair and heal joint damage as well as prevent arthritic pain.

The presence of vitamin C increases the iron absorption from the black tea. The iron will increase blood hemoglobin levels and improve oxygen flow, which will improve your energy. 

5. Support immune health 
Kombucha is naturally high in antioxidants and has a compound called DSL (D-saccharic acid-1,4-lactone). DSL is not present in unfermented teas and is beneficial for cellular detoxification. 

If you wanted to make it yourself it is fairly basic and cost effective, however it will take anywhere from 7 days to 4 weeks to make, weather depending. There are plenty of easy to follow instructions online. I would also recommend using organic and raw ingredients.  

Buying it out doesn’t cost the world, starting from $3-4 a bottle. This is a great alternative if you are out at a café or going to a friends gathering. Instead of buying soda, beer/ciders or wine grab a bottle of your favourite fermented flavour Kombucha. They look funky in a glass bottle, it tastes great and it will leave you feeling energised and healthy.
